Are you tired of having yellow, stained teeth, despite your strict daily dental hygiene? You are not alone. There are millions of people suffering from the same problem. Even the strictest of brushers will find that their teeth start to get a yellow tinge to them over time. So if you brush, floss and visit your dentist regularly then why are your teeth still discolored? What are you doing wrong? The answer is nothing. This happens because the outer layers of your teeth get stained over the years by consumption of beverages with caffeine, soda, wine and smoking.
When these outside sources of staining are left to sit on the teeth all day until your next brushing, the dentin on your teeth becomes yellowish or darkened. The best way to help your stained discolored teeth is professional teeth whitenin
Contributing factors to yellowing, stained teeth:
- Tetracycline based antibiotics used before the age of 8 years old
- Excessive exposure to fluoride as a child
- Internal bleeding due to trauma
- Discoloration due to a health condition
- Natural aging- as time goes by enamel gets thinner and thinner and will get a yellowish hue
After you get your teeth professionally cleaned, there are some thing you should keep in mind in order to keep your freshly-whitened teeth as long as possible.
When it comes to tinging your newly-whitened teeth, there are plenty of foods and / or drinks that can stain your teeth. As a rule of thumb, if it is a darker color, it will tinge your teeth. If there is 'dark' in the name, it's going to stain your teeth. So just stay away from foods like dark chocolate, beets, dark sauces and soups, and drinks like coffee, soda, wines and juice. These deeper-hued consumables will set your whitened teeth down the yellow brick road faster than those characters looking for Oz.
When it comes to tooth sensitivity, it is natural to think that it is the fault of the chemicals involved in the whitening that cause the sensitivity. While it is a catalyst to the feeling, it is actually a breakdown in your teeth's enamel that is the reason it's happening. Steering clear of acidic foods, like citrus or tomato, will help prevent the pain from happening. Same thing goes for things that are too hot or too cold. The fluctuation of your mouth's temperature will surely activate some tooth sensitivity after these types of procedures.
So what do you do to relieve the pain? You may find this to be unexpected, but chewing gum has been tested and proven to relieve the pain of sensitive teeth.

Orthodontics is a special branch of Dentistry that treats patients with improper positioning of teeth. The word 'orthodontics' or 'orthodontia', as it was previously called, comes from the Greek words 'ortho', meaning 'straight or perfect' and 'dontos', meaning 'teeth'. Orthodontics also deals with unusual shape and development of jaw or improper facial growth (dentofacial orthopedics). A person who specialize in orthodontics is called an orthodontist. It is a form of cosmetic dentistry which is used to improve the appearance of a person.
Orthodontics treatment is valuable for treating the following:
1) Treating an improper bite or Malocclusion.
2) Straightening crooked teeth
3) To improve oral functions such as speech or eating.
4) Closing wide gaps between the teeth.
Malocclusion or improper bite is of many types. It may be overbite, where the upper front set of teeth protrudes out over the lower set which may injure the person in sports, falling down, etc. Then, there is underbite, where the lower front teeth are too far forward or the upper teeth are too far back and crossbite and openbite, when the upper front teeth does not come down over the lower teeth while biting normally and there is space between the biting surfaces of the front or side teeth when the back teeth bite together, respectively. There may be misplaced midline where the center of your upper front teeth does not line up with the center of your lower front teeth. Cawding is also one form of malocclusion where the patient's jaw is narrow and there may not be enough space for all the teeth.
Orthodontics treatment treats all the above mentioned dental problems. Different types of appliances, fixed or removable, are used in orthodontics treatment. The most commonly used fixed appliance is braces which consists of wires or brackets and bands. Bands are fixed firmly around the teeth and act as anchors for the appliance, while the brackets are bonded to the front of the tooth. Arch wires pass through the brackets and are attached to the bands. This arch wire when tightened, puts tension on the teeth, thus, gradually moving them to proper positions. The braces are adjusted once a month and the treatment time varies from seven month to several years.
Other than braces, commonly used fixed appliances are fixed space maintainers and special fixed appliances. Fixed space maintainers are used when a child looses a milk tooth to stop the two teeth from the two sides to come inside the gap until the adult teeth comes out. Special fixed appliances are useful for patients to control tongue thrusting or thumb sucking, which they may find uncomfortable while eating.
Other removable appliances used for an orthodontist treatment includes aligners, removable space maintainers, jaw repositioning appliances, lip and cheek bumpers, palatal expander, removable retainers and head gears.
A proper professional advise from an orthodontist is needed before any of these treatments are opted for. An orthodontist will do an initial diagnosis which includes a full medical and dental health history, a clinical examination and X-rays of teeth and jaw. The treatment is then planned accordingly.

At your appointment, you will take an X-ray to see the shape of the root canals and determine if there are any signs of infection in a surrounding bone. Once everything is ready for surgery, your dentist or endodontist will then use local anesthesia to numb the area near the tooth. Anesthesia may not be necessary, since the nerve is dead, but most dentists still anesthetize the area to make the patient more relaxed and at ease. The anesthesia used will determine whether or not you will need to bring someone with you to drive you home.
Next, to keep the area dry and free of saliva during treatment, your dentist will place a rubber dam (a sheet of rubber) around the tooth. Once your mouth is prepared, an access hole will then be drilled into the tooth. The pulp along with bacteria, all of the decayed nerve tissue and other debris is then removed from the tooth using root canal files. A series of these files of increasing diameter are each subsequently placed into the access hole and worked the full length of the tooth to scrape and scrub the sides of the root canals. Water or sodium hypochlorite is used periodically to flush away the debris.
Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, it is sealed, which may take up to a week, depending on the doctor. If there is an infection, your dentist may put a medication inside the tooth to clear it up. Others may choose to seal the tooth the same day. If the root canal is not completed on the same day, a temporary filling is placed in the exterior hole in the tooth to keep out contaminants like saliva and food between appointments.
At the next appointment, to fill the interior of the tooth, a sealer paste and a rubber compound called gutta percha is placed into the tooth's root canal. To fill the exterior access hole created at the beginning of treatment, a filling is placed. Once filled, you may have a tooth restoration procedure, but that's it. You're done and no more toothache. Because a tooth that needs a root canal often is one that has a large filling or extensive decay or other weakness, a crown, crown and post, or other restoration often needs to be placed on the tooth to protect it, prevent it from breaking, and restore it to full function. Your dentist will discuss the need for any additional dental work with you. Pain will be involved, but you are already in pain. This pain will eventually go away and your tooth will be good as new.

Of all of the reasons we decide to chew a stick of gum, fresh breath is one of the main ones. Something that may surprise you is the fact that lots of gum contains natural oils that fight bad breath causing germs, instead of just covering them up. Some of the best odor-fighting flavors are cinnamon, citrus and any minty flavor you can get your hands on. But beyond the fresh burst of flavor, chewing gum also perpetuates saliva production. Saliva helps fight against dry mouth and the odors created as it helps clean your teeth and stave off sugary snacks in between meals, thus further combatting bad breath.
While there is lots of sugary gum is available on the market, there have also been advances in chewing gum production that can help PREVENT cavities and promote other health benefits than the more cavity-inducing versions. The substitution of Xylitol for sugar has not only reduced cavity production, but it also attacks micro-organisms that damage teeth so our teeth can re-mineralize faster. Add calcium lactate to the mix and now Xylitol has help in the re-mineralization of our tooth enamel.
If you want to go even further with the health benefits of chewing gum, doctors have also used chewing gum to help patients with their cognitive brain functions, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and even abdominal or gastrointestinal surgery recovery time. So not only is gum good for your oral health, it can also help out lots of other issues!
Of course, what goes up must come down and chewing gum is no different. But I will say that the down sides of it aren't quite as harsh as you may think. Yes, chewing sugary gum is bad for you and will give you cavities and other issues with your teeth if you don't take care of them. Yes, some artificial sweeteners they swap out to make sugar-free gum (like aspartame) aren't great for us either. They can cause diseases we would never even link with chewing gum. And yes, you can also develop issues with your jaw from chewing it so much. But these are all issues of excessive use. To deflect these issues, don't make chewing gum an obsession. Just look at what happened to Violet Beauregarde in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…

How did we end up in this kind of pain? A toothache is one of the most jarring pains we have and it seems like we never know we're about to have one when it sneaks up on you. There are actually lots of different ways a toothache can occur. It can be as simple as a cracked tooth, cavities or exposed roots from not taking care of our teeth like we should. But it can also be something more serious, like your ears or sinuses causing the issue.
When it comes to pain, each one of us has a different degree pain tolerance. Some of us can work through a headache, while others are taken out at the first signs of one developing. Denying yourself a solution to your frequent headaches is only delaying the inevitable, and possibly making your situation worse. If your headaches persist, you need to figure out what is causing these frequent migraines or they will only continue to worsen. Similarly, headaches and toothaches are detected by the same trigeminal nerve in your head, which means one can be the cause of the other without being aware that is the case. Unfortunately, there is no real way to dissect the problem without the help of your dental professional.
There are, however, ways for you to give yourself some temporary relief while you are waiting to see the dentist. Of course there are always over-the-counter remedies, like Ibuprofen or pain relieving gels, but there are also some natural ways to help ease your pain. Try chewing on a piece of garlic for a while every day. In addition to being a pain reliever, it is also a way to strengthen your teeth. The soothing heat and salt combination your mouth gets from gargling with hot saltwater for a few minutes also help relieve a toothache. Vitamin C from citrus juice also does a great job with pain relief. If it's sinuses or another infection causing the pain, take a day to relax. Lots of water and sleep in a dark room will do wonders to help your aches and pains.
In the end, it is important to pay attention to the signals your body gives you when something is wrong. Ignoring the pain will only lead to more problems, so make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as you find headaches or toothaches are persistent. The technological advancements in dentistry makes dental procedures easily accessible, convenient and virtually painless. The best solution is to take care of your teeth. Good oral hygiene is the best line of defense.

- Properly Care for Your Veneers- Practicing proper oral hygiene is the best way to ensure a healthy mouth. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing at least once and using a mouthwash. This is one of the most important actions you can take to prolong the life of your porcelain veneers.
- Toss The Hard-Bristled Toothbrush- Porcelain veneers are very durable, however they can be damaged by brushing with a hard-bristled tooth brush. Be sure to toss your hard-bristled toothbrush and replace it with a soft-bristled tooth brush. Also, be sure to avoid toothpastes that contain harsh abrasives. If you need recommendation on what type of toothpaste you should use, be sure to ask your dentist.

However, thanks to all of the advances in cosmetic dentistry, achieving the perfect smile you've always dreamt of having can become a reality. While there are many options, porcelain veneers are amongst the most natural looking restorations you can choose from.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom made shells that are designed to cover the front of your tooth or teeth to improve their appearance. These shells are bonded to your teeth changing the color, shape, size and length, while also creating beautiful, natural looking results.
Not only do porcelain veneers provide beautiful, natural looking results, they also provide strength and durability comparable to natural tooth enamel. While some veneers are made of a composite resin, porcelain provide have added extra benefit of being stain resist to classic stains like coffee, tea and smoke.
Type of Dental Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix
- Teeth that are discolored or severally stained
- Teeth that have been worn down
- Teeth that are chipped or broken
- Teeth that are irregularly shaped, misaligned or uneven
- Teeth that have gaps between them
How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?
If taken care of properly, porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years. While porcelain veneers themselves are not living, the tooth and gums surrounds it are. Say your gum recede, the edge of your veneer may be exposed, resulting in having to replace it or letting it be.
As mentioned earlier in this post, porcelain veneers are very durable, however they can break or chip or crack like any other restoration. How long your Porcelain veneers ultimately depends on you and your oral health routine.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for porcelain veneers are ones that have good oral health. Unfortunately, if you have gum disease, serious tooth decay, gingivitis, or cracked teeth you would be an unlikely candidate for porcelain veneers. Having any dental problems treated beforehand may give you a better chance of being an ideal candidate.

Not only does it cause bleeding gums and tooth loss, but recent studies have shown that periodontal disease may also be linked to other major health complications.
One possible reason may be that periodontal disease is a bacterial infection and that bacteria can travel anywhere throughout the body.
That being said, below are a few ways that periodontal disease can affect your overall health:
- It may harm your heart. People suffering from gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart complications, such as coronary artery disease, compared to those who don’t have gum disease. One theory is that harmful bacterial from your mouth can enter the blood stream and attach to fatty plaque in your hearts blood vessels, which can cause inflammation and increase your risk of blood clots that can trigger heart attacks.
- It may affect your memory. Some research has suggested there may be a link between gum disease and an increased risk of developing dementia. Other research has shown that periodontal problems may be associated with mild cognitive impairment, such as memory problems that make daily life more difficult. Experts believe that oral bacteria may spread to the brain through the nerve channels connected to the jaw or through the blood stream, and may contribute to the type of plaque that has been tied to Alzheimer’s.
- It may affect your breathing. Breathing in harmful bacteria has been known to cause respiratory infections, so what if that bacteria is living in your mouth? Periodontal disease may increase your risk of developing respiratory infections, such as pneumonia.
- It can make blood sugar harder to control. People that have diabetes are more likely to have gum disease, than those who don’t, and inflammation may be partly to blame. Diabetics are more susceptible to infections, including gum disease. Additional research has found that gum disease can make blood sugar harder to control, and that treating can help improve diabetes symptoms.
- It may cause problems with conception. Aside from pregnant women being more at risk to develop periodontal disease, it seems gum disease can also cause problems with conception. Those with periodontal disease may have a tougher time getting pregnant, while also increasing the chances of miscarriage.
Your oral health is extremely important to your overall health, so if this list doesn’t help you realize how bad periodontal disease is for you, then I don’t know what will!
If you are suffering from periodontal disease, be sure to keep it under control by brushing for two minutes twice a day, flossing once and using an antimicrobial mouthwash. Also, visit your dentist for checkups and professional cleanings on a regular basis.

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria that's found in plaque, the sticky colorless fill that forms on teeth. If the plaque isn't properly removed by preforming oral cleaning habits, such as brushing and flossing, it will build up and the bacteria will infect not only your gums and teeth, but your gum tissue and bone that supports your teeth as well. There are three main phases of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.
- Gingivitis-The first stage of gum diseases is the most common and is referred to as gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of your gums that's caused by plaque buildup. If you're not keeping up with proper oral hygiene to remove the plaque, it produces toxins that irritate your gum tissue. Gingivitis is the only stage of gum disease that is reversible.
- Periodontitis- At this stage of gum disease your supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are irreversibly damaged. At this point you may start forming pockets below your gumline, which can trap food and plaque. With proper dental treatments and improved oral care, you can usually help prevent further damage.
- Advanced Periodontitis- In the final stage of gum disease, your fibers and bones supporting your teeth are destroyed, which can cause your teeth to move, loosen or even fall out. This will start to affect your bite. If treatment cannot save your teeth, they may need to be removed by your dentist.

One of the more common choices for fillings is composite resin. Composite resins are typically used because they can be matched to the color of the patient’s teeth. They’re typically applied as a soft plastic material, formed in place by the dentist, and hardened with a special light. Resin fillings blend well, making them aesthetically pleasing, but are not as durable as other options.
Metal (or silver) amalgam fillings were very common for many years – easily formed onto the tooth surface, they provide a durable filling that can last for decades. While they’re durable, they’re also very visible – the silver fillings can be seen when the patient opens their mouth, and on visible teeth, they can be visible in the smile line.
Gold fillings, like amalgam fillings, are very durable. While gold fillings offer the same functional benefits of amalgam fillings, they can be more aesthetically pleasing to some patients – however, that visual benefit comes at a cost, as they’re significantly more expensive than metal amalgam.
For severe cavities, dentists may suggest lab created dental inlays – porcelain objects that get fitted into a void created by the dentist when they removed decay. Porcelain fillings and inlays match teeth visibly, are very durable, and can be used on severely damaged teeth, but they’re more expensive and involve more tooth removal than traditional fillings.
If you have a cavity, talk to your dentist about the type of filling they recommend. The material choice may be easy based on the location of the filling (a filling in your front teeth will almost always be composite resin because it blends well), but it’s worth talking to your dentist about both the material options and the cost options. If you have existing metal amalgam fillings, you can even talk to your dentist about whether or not they’re in good shape – in some cases, top rated dentists will want to remove them and replace them with composite resin if they show signs of failure.
